The Social Worker Said So
I'm the positive spirit.
Joey called and asked if I would be willing to be the secondary support person for his transplant, Katie being the primary support person. I happily accepted. In August, I traveled out to the Detroit area for a transplant support team meeting where I sat in with Katie and Joey and we learned all about pre and post transplant life. The social worker told us it was important to have a "positive spirit" during this time as there would be highs and lows. It's me. I'm the positive spirit.
Let's travel back to March 1992. I was born and Katie was now a big sister. That's how I know Katie. :) Our theme song is basically "Sisters" from White Christmas.
Let's jump ahead from March 1992 to the fall 2010.
Katie was a junior at Cedarville University and I was a freshman. Here we are.

I went to my first, and last, bro-sis event and ended up sitting across from a guy named Joey. We talked a little bit. I shared that I was from a suburb of Chicago. I shared about my church and how we served at a homeless shelter in the area. He shared that he recently talked to another person in passing from a place called Joliet and her church did the same thing. We eventually realized that we were both talking about Katie.
I worked in the library with Katie and noticed Joey hung out in the area we worked pretty often, sometimes napping. We all started hanging out more. One fine day Joey told Katie's roommate and I that he was going to ask Katie to be his girlfriend. She had had a rough day and did NOT want to go. We pumped her up with Eminem's "Not Afraid" and sent her on the way. The rest is history!
Here I am making this picture from their wedding better. |

As you can tell from the pictures of the three of us, I embody the phrase "positive spirit." But in all seriousness, I am very thankful for Katie and Joey and completely honored to have been chosen as the secondary support person and positive spirit for this transplant journey we are all on.
Katie asked me to post here and there to share my perspective on things and I am looking forward to it!
